Fernando Zóbel (1924–1984)

Exhibition: Order is Essential
Venue: National Gallery Singapore
Till 30th November 2025

The exhibition graciously invites attendees to embark on a journey with Zóbel through the diverse landscapes of North America, Asia, and Europe, regions wherein he actively engaged in artistic practice from the 1940s to the 1980s. This showcasing features over 200 items, including rare archival materials and masterpieces that were created in collaboration with the eminent artists within Zóbel’s circle. The title of the exhibition, “Order is Essential,” a quotation attributed to the artist, encapsulates Zóbel’s meticulous creative process, underscoring the cultivation of essential beauty through systematic order within the inherently unpredictable domain of creativity.

Born in the Philippines to a distinguished Spanish lineage, Zóbel (1924–1984) was a transcontinental artist, patron, and scholar, whose profound and lasting interest in the world greatly impacted his expressionistic and abstract creations across a variety of mediums, including drawing, printmaking, painting, and photography.
